Gonda Fellowhips for research at IIAS

Each year IIAS reserves a number of places for Indologists who have been awarded a fellowship by the J. Gonda Foundation. These fellowships are intended for promising young Indologists at the post-doctorate level to spend a period of three to six months at IIAS.

Application form

Please note that, as candidates are selected by the Gonda Foundation, you should apply for this scholarship with the Gonda Foundation (not with IIAS), using the Application form Gonda Fund Fellowship that is availbale on the website of the Gonda Foundation (www.knaw.nl/en/awards/subsidies/gonda-fund).

Application deadline 

The application deadline for the Gonda Fellowship at IIAS is:

1 April and 1 October every year.

Decision

Decisions are announced by the J. Gonda Fund to the applicant roughly one month after the application deadline. 

  

About The J. Gonda Foundation 

The J. Gonda Foundation is a foundation of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) that supports the scholarly study of Sanskrit, other Indian languages and literature, and Indian cultural history. The Foundation has been funding scholarly publications and re-issues of existing works since 1992. Other activities include the annual Gond Lecture. 

The Foundation’s assets consist of the estate of Indologist J. Gonda, who was a member of the Academy. 


Other funding options by the J. Gonda Fund  

In addition to the fellowships for research at IIAS as described above, the Gonda Fund also covers funding for:
- a project or publication in Indology by researchers or scientific publishers
- PhD student grants for promising PhD students for a special research project, a working visit abroad, or another activity.
