Indian Medical Research Network

The Indian Medical Heritage Research Network wants to stimulate social-cultural and social-historical research on Indian medical traditions such as Ayurveda, Unani tibb, Siddha, Yoga and Sowa Rigpa.

The network wishes to link initiatives and people who work on the contemporary relevance of these traditions both in India and in Europe. Of special interest is the integration of Indian medicine in Indian public health and its role as second resort for middle class Indians and Europeans. Professional workshops, outreach activities, publications are the means for achieving the network’s objectives. As a set-up the Indian Medical Heritage Research Network wants: to link up with diverse initiatives in the field of Indian medical traditions such as the projected Indian Medical Heritage travelling exhibition of the Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine; to mobilize the participants of a recent workshop on Integrating Traditional South Asian Medicine into Modern Health Care Systems (Jawaharlal Nehru University, October 2012); and to initiate outreach activities on India’s medical heritage such as the recent lectures and publications on the Hortus Malabaricus, a 12-volume 17th century work on Indian medicinal plants (IIAS Newsletter 61, pp. 50-52).

The network offers a virtual space for collating research findings and other information about India’s medical heritage covering diverse perspectives, interests and backgrounds. The Indian Medical Heritage Research Network wants to be an interactive on-line community platform.
