Venue: Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis / Keizersgracht 633 / Amsterdam

Topic: The Art Collections of the 19th Century Dutch Colonial Elite

Speaker: Drs. Caroline Drieëenhuizen (PhD Student University of Amsterdam)

It was customary for many persons belonging to the Dutch ellite in the nineteenth century to collect objects from the Netherlands Indies. They liked to show off both their collections of the material culture of Indonesia and their knowledge about it. This lecture will be about the persons who collected art from Indonesia, their motives and the historical context in which this took place.
