On 31 January 2014 IIAS will be hosting a lecture (in Dutch) about the daily life of Emperors, Artists and Merchants in Ming China, – to be held by professor Anne Gerritsen from the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies.

Organised in cooperation with the VVAK (Vereniging van Vrienden van Aziatische Kunst) and the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, around the exhibition ‘Ming, Emperors, Artists and Merchants in Ancient China.

'Het dagelijkse leven van keizers, kunstenaars en kooplui'

De prachtige objecten tentoongesteld in De Nieuwe Kerk illustreren stuk voor stuk hoe schitterend de Ming dynastie (1368-1644) was.  Gouden wierookvaten en porseleinen schalen voor keizerinnen illustreren de cultuur van het keizerlijk hof; verfijnde schilderingen laten zien hoe geleerden zich terugtrokken op het platteland, terwijl kooplui geld verdienden aan de vercommercialisering van de kunst.  Keizers, kunstenaars en kooplui maakten zeker een groot deel van de dienst uit tijdens de Ming. Maar door goed te kijken naar de kunst die hier tentoongesteld staat kunnen we ook hele andere aspecten van de Ming zien: het meer alledaagse leven, ver weg van het keizerlijke hof en buiten het bereik van geleerden.  Deze lezing zal proberen de schittering van de Ming te illustreren door juist ook deze alledaagse aspecten zichtbaar te maken.
